Hearing Impaired Classes

The Hearing Impaired classes comprises three classes with a maximum of 9 students each.  The students attend the unit because they have a hearing loss which affects their ability to learn in a mainstream classroom. They wear hearing aids and use FMs to make the best use of their hearing.

There are three class teachers as well as Teachers' Aides who work with the children.  The hearing support preschool class caters to students from 3-5 years of age and offers a comprehensive preschool program with a focus on developing listening and language skills.

There are two hearing support classes for infants and primary aged students.  For some of their work the children are in their own classroom with their teacher, but at other times the children are integrated into mainstream classes.  The teachers plan the work together and share in the preparation and teaching.

The children with hearing impairment join the other children for Assembly, Sport, Fitness, Band, Signing Choir and Camp as well as for many classroom activities. They study the same units of work as the other children.

We regularly hold Family Nights so that families can come and enjoy a meal together with other families.  After eating we usually have a talk on a topic of interest to the parents or even a performance by the children.  These nights are very popular and well attended because they provide an opportunity for families, who come from a wide area, to share their experiences with each other.
